Osteria Francescana, in Modena, and L’Argine a Vencò, in Dolegna del Collio (GO). These are the two establishments at the pinnacle of 50 Top Italy – The Best Italian Restaurants of 2022. This well-established online guide is freely accessible to anyone. It is curated annually by LSDM, the international Congress for gourmet cooking, and by the publication Luciano Pignataro Wine&Food Blog.
This year’s exciting awards ceremony was conducted by Federico Quaranta, and was broadcast on Tuesday, October 26th in live streaming, garnering thousands of views.
The best restaurants of the Italian Peninsula were divided according to typology and by price range. There were two rankings with 50 venues in each: “Top Restaurants” and “Gourmet Dining.”
As aforementioned, the first category’s top spot went to the iconic venue by chef Massimo Bottura, the Osteria Francescana in Modena. Second place went to Uliassi, another sanctuary of Italian cuisine, which is supervised by Mauro Uliassi in Senigallia (AN). Third place was awarded to Enrico Bartolini MUDEC, owned by Enrico Bartolini and located in Milan. Just missing the podium in fourth place is Daní Maison in Ischia (NA), and Duomo in fifth, located in Ragusa.
In the second category Antonia Klugmann reigned supreme with her L’Argine a Vencò, in Dolegna del Collio (GO). She was followed by chef Gianluca Gorini’s daGorini in San Piero in Bagno (FC). In third position was Dattilo in Strongoli (KR) with Caterina Ceraudo at the helm. Fourth and fifth place went to Marotta Ristorante in Squille (CE) and Lido 84 in Gardone Riviera (BS).
A general overview of both rankings shows that no less than sixteen regions of the Italian peninsula are represented across both categories. The most present is Lombardy with 13 venues. It is followed by Campania (11), Lazio and Veneto (10 each), Piemonte (9), Tuscany (8), Emilia Romagna (7), Marche (5), Abruzzo, Calabria Friuli Venezia Giulia, Puglia and Sicily (4), Liguria and Trentino Alto Adige (3), and Sardegna (1).
“The guide – underscore Barbara Guerra, Luciano Pignataro and Albert Sapere, the three curators of the editorial project – showcases an Italian gastronomic network that is both vivacious and attentive to change. From the North to the South, it has effectively managed the thousands of difficulties posed by the pandemic. The different categories present in our guide are meant to assist our readers in their choice of dining experience. All of the restaurants were visited anonymously by our inspectors and each bill was paid in full. The assessments that were made take in to account the overall experience and all of the services which are offered to the customers. Therefore, evaluation is not based solely on the cuisine of a particular venue, but also on the service in the dining area, the cantina, the ability of the establishment to valorize and use products from its own territory, and the attention given to both environmental and economic sustainability.
