The 50 Top Italy 2021 awards ceremony was held in live streaming on Tuesday, October 20th and received thousands of views.  This was the second edition of this completely free online guide to the Best Restaurants in Italy.  It is a project by LSDM –  the renowned congress of gourmet cooking held in Paestum since 2008 – and curated by its creators, Barbara Guerra and Albert Sapere together with the journalist Luciano Pignataro.

The evening was conducted by Federico Quaranta who announced the best establishments in the Penninsula which were divided into four categories according to price and typology:  Restaruants over €120, Restaurants up to €120, Trattorie/Osterie and Low Cost establishments.  The four distinct categories, each composed of 50 ranked restaurants, were revealed during an exciting countdown to the four restaurants in the top position of each category:  Osteria Francescana in Modena by the chef Massimo Bottura; daGorini, in San Piero in Bagno (FC) led by Gianluca Gorini; Antica Osteria del Mirasole, in San Giovanni in Persiceto (BO) by Franco Cimini; and Panificio Bonci in Rome by Gabriele Bonci.

The daGorini establishment,” the three curators comment, “is the only change in the top positions with respect to our previous edition.  The rest, the Bottura, Cimini and Banci establishments, are to be considered, in their respective categories, three of the best exemplars in the Italian restaurant sector, which are also recognized on the international level.  However, the young generations are certainly not standing by to watch.  This is testified by the many quality establishments among the 200 reviewed, that are led by young cooks and restauranteurs, beginning with Gianluca Gorini.  At the same time, while it is true that three winners out of four are located in Emilia Romagna, a testament to the great gastronomic history of this region, it is also true that many different territories along the Boot, from the north to the south, are represented in the classifications.  This confirms how unique our country is in the worldwide panorama, steeped from head to food, in culture and good food.”

There is a regional diversity found in the podiums of the four categories.  For the Over €120 Restaurants, in fact, we find Uliassi, in Senigallia (AN), by the chef Mauro Uliassi, and the restaurant Daní Maison, in Ischia (NA), by Nino Di Costanzo in second and third position.  In the Restaurants Up to €120 list:  L’Argine a Vencò, in Dolegna del Collio (GO), by Antonia Klugmann, and Lido 84, in Gardone Riviera (BS), by Riccardo Camanini. For the Trattoria/Osteria category: La Brinca, in Ne (GE), with Simone Circella in the kitchen, and Nù Trattoria Italiana dal 1960 – Trattoria di civiltà e libertà contadina, in Acuto (FR), in the capable hands of Salvatore Tassa. In the Low Cost list: Da Gigione Hamburgheria & Braceria, in Pomigliano d’Arco (NA), with Gennaro Cariulo directing the kitchen, and Anikò, in Senigallia (AN), by Moreno Cedroni.

“We would like to give particular thanks,” the three curators conclude, “to our 150 inspectors who, while paying the bill and remaining anonymous, visited the establishments several times, judging them in total anonymity.  We are of the opinion that the gastronomic narrative must not be interrupted, especially now that restaurant businesses are facing significant challenges.  We owe it to those who soldier ahead despite the many obstacles, never lowering the bar for quality.  As we have stated repeatedly, keeping interest high in a sector that contributes to the greatness of our country, is not only our job, it is our passion.”
